…amazing things will happen.

I’m reading “The War For Late Night“, and I was reminded of this:

All I ask of you is one thing: please don’t be cynical. I hate cynicism — it’s my least favorite quality and it doesn’t lead anywhere. Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get. But if you work really hard, and you’re kind, amazing things will happen.

Conan O’Brien said this on his last Tonight Show, and it resonated with me then – January 2010 – because I have tried to be kind and not cynical since I learned what cynicism was. (That was a long time ago, by the way, I didn’t look it up after Conan said it on tv.)

I don’t claim to be able to put a dent in the universe or anything, but I try to help where I can. I do easy stuff like donate to the Red Cross on my phone, or retweet someone I know who worked really hard on a good app and now wants to get attention for it. I volunteer to help out at different nerd events around town, and I am working with my friend Jean on App Camp 4 Girls to help make the world a better place for nerdy girls like me. I try to help and I try not to be a super complainer; there are other people who are way better at it and honestly most of what I have to complain about would be considered First World Problems, so I go for the joke or the smile or the fun thing instead.

Here’s how I know it’s working for me:

This makes me feel like I’m doing something right. So I’ll keep it up. I have worked hard, and I have tried to be kind, and I have two amazing jobs and some fun side things too. I like to think they are related.
